In today’s bathrooms, tub and shower alcoves are designed in a wide variety of styles complimenting the great number of features now available in the modern bath. Showers may include surround showers with multiple shower heads also known as 'car wash' showers, seating for comfort or for necessity such as accommodating the limited mobility of the elderly and water jets in the tub simulating the stimulating effects of a hot tub. Shower stalls or alcoves can take on their own dimensions limited only by the floor space available in your bathroom. Ceramic and natural stone tile such as as granite offer the widest array of design possibilities and customization, the final results only being limited by one's imagination and budget.
Ceramic, porcelain and natural stone tile offer unlimited options for design function and visual appeal. These are by far the most versatile material to use for your tub or shower alcove as well as vanity and wash basin countertops. You can create specific looks, such as contemporary, retro, traditional, rustic, country, and more.
In addition, ceramic, porcelain and natural stone tile lasts a lifetime. Over time, color will not fade with these materials, and when installed properly should never leak. Tile surfaces are actually very easy to clean. When combined with regular use of a spray-on mildew preventative product, grout mildew can be easily controlled. Larger tiles such as 18" square tiles when used on alcove walls greatly reduce the overall number of grout lines therefore minimizing the surface area for mildew to accumulate.
Ceramic wall tiles are normally less durable than tile designed specifically for flooring. Most wall tile is glazed with a semi-gloss or matte surface. The glazed surface has a very low slip resistance and becomes slippery when wet. Therefore, glazed wall tile is much more suited for tub and shower alcoves, walls or countertop applications rather than floors.
